Boost your bounce: 10 steps to build personal resilience

Welcome to the season of change! As we slowly bid farewell to the sizzling days of summer and cozy up to the comforting hues of autumn, it's time to talk resilience. Life is full of ups and downs, from work stress to personal setbacks, but our ability to bounce back from challenges is what sets us apart. Resilience isn't just about surviving; it's about thriving in tough times and it's a skill that can be honed over time to help us to better adapt and cope with stress.

So grab a cuppa, settle in, and let's embark on this quirky journey to boost our bounce and tackle whatever the universe throws our way!

Let's dive into some simple tricks to boost your resilience game:

1. Rally your squad

Hang out with your tribe - mates, colleagues, or even that wise mentor. Strong relationships with fam and friends are key to building up that bounce-back power.

Building a support network is crucial for resilience, especially during times of change. Whether it's catching up with friends for a coffee, seeking advice from a trusted colleague, chatting with a mentor, or engaging in recreation activities, surrounding yourself with positive influences can make a big difference. According to some brainy folks in the Australian Disaster Resilience Knowledge Hub, having a support network can buffer the negative effects of stress and improve psychological well-being. So, next time you need a pick-me-up, don't be afraid to call in the troops!

2. Shake off setbacks

When life throws lemons at you, remember it's just a temporary blip. Look ahead to brighter days and notice the tiny wins along the way.

Life is full of surprises (good and bad), but it's how we respond to setbacks that shapes our resilience. Try to focus on the positives and look for silver linings. For example, if you've faced a setback at work, use it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Embrace the power of positive thinking, just like they talk about over at Beyond Blue. Before you know it, you'll be bouncing back better than ever!

3. Roll with the punches

Change is the name of the game.  And while it can be as unpredictable as Melbourne's four seasons in one day, embracing change is the key to staying strong. Embrace it, adapt to it, and strut your stuff through life's twists and turns. Remember that while change can be challenging, it also offers opportunities for growth and renewal. 4. Keep it real

Set small, achievable goals to keep your momentum rolling. Even baby steps count when you're moving forward! Break larger tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, and celebrate each achievement along the way. Focus on what you can control and take consistent action so you can gradually move closer to your goals. By setting SMART goals – you know, the ones that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound – you'll be well on your way to success.

Glen James (creator of This Is Money) and John Pidgeon were joined by Brooke Lowry, creator of the new Goalie app, had a chat about achieving goals and how to use the app to do that. Glen also shares his SMART-YO goal system in this video.

5. Take charge

Life's too short to sit back and let things happen to you. Take the reins and steer your ship through rough seas, one wave at a time.

Empower yourself by taking proactive steps to address challenges and overcome obstacles. Whether it's seeking out new opportunities, learning new skills, or standing up for yourself, taking ownership of your circumstances can boost your resilience.

6. Flex those muscles

Being flexible isn't just for yoga class! Learn to bend, not break. Being open to different perspectives and compromise can help you navigate tricky waters.

Practice open-mindedness and willingness to compromise, both in your personal and professional relationships. By being flexible and adaptable, you'll be better equipped to navigate life's twists and turns.

7. Find silver linings

Every cloud has a silver lining – even the dark, stormy ones. In every challenge, there is an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. Tough times can shape you into a stronger, wiser version of yourself. Take time to reflect on your experiences and identify the lessons learned. Focus on the positives in your life, even during difficult times. So, count your blessings and embrace the silver linings!

8. Spread the good vibes

So, turns out that being thankful is not just about making your grandma happy - it's actually a superpower for your brain and body! Research suggests that gratitude can enhance resilience and psychological well-being.

End your day on a positive note by counting your blessings. A little gratitude can go a long way in boosting your mood. Whether it's writing in a gratitude journal, sending a heartfelt thank-you note, or simply savouring a moment of peace and quiet, nurturing gratitude can boost overall well-being.

9. Keep things in check

When life gets hectic, it's easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. Take a step back and remind yourself of your past successes and triumphs. Maintaining perspective is crucial for resilience, especially during challenging times. So, keep your chin up, stay focused on your goals, and remember – you've got what it takes to overcome any obstacle.

10. Self-care, baby!

Nurture your mind and body with activities that bring you joy and calm. Taking care of yourself primes you to tackle whatever life throws your way.

Whether it's indulging in your favourite hobby or taking time to relax and recharge, self-care is the ultimate act of resilience. Explore practical tips for self-care and make self-love a top priority!

Remember, resilience isn't just about bouncing back - it's about bouncing back better and stronger.
